When booking a stay at a cottage, given the unpredictable nature of the weather, rain can unfortunately be on the agenda, making our planned activities less accessible. While hiking in the rain can be fun, just like fishing under a cloudy sky, strong wind and cold temperatures often make us want to seek refuge indoors. “But what to do?”

Here is a list of great ideas that might make you almost wish for a rain shower during your next stay!

  1. HAVE A BONFIRE

Of course, a bonfire is a classic for creating a cozy atmosphere and keeping warm, but it’s also the key element for instilling calm and allowing you a moment of relaxation or even meditation. Watching the dance of the flames is undeniably one of the most soothing things.

  1. TAKE A BREAK FROM ELECTRONIC DEVICES; BOARD GAMES INSTEAD

Cottages often have board games that will help you rediscover the joy of playing with family or a partner. It’s a chance to “reconnect” with human interaction; competitive spirits will be delighted, and those feeling nostalgic, satisfied. Gather around the table with chips and snacks, a delight for the younger ones; laughter and anecdotes guaranteed!

  1. TAKE A NAP OR TWO

When do we ever take the time to grant ourselves this little luxury that does us so much good?! Snuggle into the cushions in front of the fire, fall asleep to the sound of rain in a cozy corner of the veranda, wrap yourself in the softest of blankets, away from the ambient noise… At the cottage, it’s the perfect place for an afternoon nap without guilt; make the most of it!

  1. SUPPORT LOCAL

Visit local vendors, throw on a little raincoat, and you’re good to go! Why not use this opportunity to gather ingredients for a special dinner or get a unique item to bring a bit of the “cottage” home? Moreover, meeting the artisan or owner is a fascinating experience. Don’t hesitate to visit the micro-museums that will surprise you with their local history. Support local, and you’ll surely find some treasures.

  1. PREPARE A FEAST

Following the previous suggestion, prepare a decadent meal. Everyone gathers in the kitchen, each with their task, and you embark on the grandest feast. Ingredients previously purchased during your local tour, it’s time to become great chefs! How about a competition for the best spaghetti sauce!? Set a beautiful table and enjoy your meal! Bon appétit!

And for the brave souls in the summer, put on your swimsuits and dance in the rain! If the cooler seasons have begun, you’ll surely find solace with coffee or hot chocolate in hand. Rain can sometimes give us the blues, but when you think about it, it often allows us to come together and “take the time to take our time!”

Dress comfortably and smile on those gray days!
